What’s your dream?
In moments of peace and stillness, what comes to you? Seriously….what are you doing all this for? When you stop to listen, what is your heart saying?
With distractions and responsibilities coming at us from all angles, it’s increasingly difficult to even find moments of peace let alone stay in them long enough for your heart to speak its truth. We become so good at shutting it out. At telling ourselves to work harder, longer, faster, achieve more, earn more, own more. This is an unfortunate reality of a world in which success is judged by financial wealth above all else. And yet….all the research on causes of happiness tell us that money is only a small part of it. In fact, as Western civilisations become more wealthy, rates of depression, suicide and mental illness are increasing. We all see the pattern, but we don’t break away from it.
Why do we need to reach breaking point before we accept change?
I am no exception to this killer pattern. Two years ago, my husband and I were close to digging ourselves deeper into a life neither one of us really wanted. That’s when we finally decided to change our lives and relinquish financial security for a chance to chase a dream.
It’s a familiar scene. We were on New Year break in a beautiful, sleepy seaside village on the south coast of NSW, completely and utterly spent. We were recovering from a year in busy corporate jobs, looking after two boys (2 and 4), and planning a renovation to our house to eek out a few more square meters of desperately needed living space. We were sleep deprived, a little over-weight, unfit, and quick to snap. We felt like we were in a spinning wheel, looking down the barrel of endless mortgage repayments and private school fees we felt obliged to pay. The 4 precious weeks out of 52 in a year would never be enough to allow us to recover from such an intense daily existence. We weren’t thriving – just surviving.
Who was putting us under all this pressure? Who was the psycho forcing us to work ourselves into a frenzy? Oh, wait a sec….that would be ME!
Contemplating life over that beautiful sunset, we realised we were our own worst enemies. We had fallen into this situation and were either too busy or too tired to question it.
That night, we decided to change our lives. We hatched a plan to make a sea-change, quit our fantastic well-paid jobs (to which we’d always aspired and were wonderfully grateful for), and start a business in which we could both aspire to do our best work. That night, workwellgroup was born.
Our mission is simple – to live a life fulfilled, and help others do the same. Consider that – complete life fulfilment. No regrets. No bad days. Nothing left unsaid. No stone left unturned. Every experience welcomed and learned from. It’s idealistic, I know, but we firmly believe that true personal and professional fulfilment comes from a mission with a higher purpose. So long as that mission is important, meets a need, and comes from the heart. Almost two years later, we’re now living in by the ocean, growing our little start-up and loving every minute. Our kids are thriving, learning how to surf and refusing to wear shoes. We still experience the same daily highs and lows that any working parent does, but every day is a conscious choice in living mindfully and being in the moment.
We’ve designed the The Mindful Leaders Retreat, 25-28 October in beautiful Byron Bay, to help others do the same within their own businesses and careers. It’s three nights away with a small group of like-minded professionals and business owners, to stop and rethink your approach to life, business and leadership.
If you stopped to listen to your heart, what would it say?

Everything is connected; everything! Love the courage you both have shown. From one #Seachanger to another – stay on purpose. Great post.
Beautifully written and showing us a higher level of thinking that most of us simply aren’t capable of.
Those who need this the most will be the most difficult to convince they do.
We need more people like you guys to help others.
Great blog Steph, awesome to see you living your dream! Hope you are all well. Brad
Hi Stephanie, it is so great to see how you have evolved and where you are at now. Sounds very exciting, and inspiring for us all!
Such a great story. Thanks for sharing. Your courage to follow your dream is inspiring!
Inspirational, Steph. 9 years ago, our family of 5 took off to ‘Tuscany til the money runs out’. It brought surprises – like a career opportunity in Russia – and challenges (the Moscow-Milan commute and Cath’s Dad dying). You and Clint are challenging me to think about what we can do to shake it up again now.
