Our first meeting with Grant Moffitt was at Byron Bay’s iconic Rails Hotel. It was a meeting that would provide the clarity and encouragement we needed to ‘live a life fulfilled’ and help others on their journey.
When my husband and I were contemplating moving our lives to Byron Bay, a colleague in Melbourne insisted we connect with Grant, who had made the move several years previously.
Grant rocks up relaxed and casual, explaining that he’d just come in from taking his three young children to the beach after school and had a hard time getting them back in for dinner. Comfortably tucked away in a booth at the back bar, we shared a few stories and a couple of beers. Unbeknownst to him, that night Grant gave us the final push we needed to commit to moving.
Grant Moffitt is an accomplished entrepreneur. He is a self-made success story. Graduating as a Chartered Accountant, he started out building his own accounting firm from the ground up. He and his co-founder built an impressive client list and delivered healthy returns, but Grant realised there was always going to be cap on his time and decided to sell-out to his business partners. He went on to found a number of organisations; Grab Industries, Microhire, Corporate Locksmiths and Kimberly Discovery Cruises to name some of his greatest successes.
Over coffee recently in a new Byron haunt “Spoke” (just opposite the Golf Course – a hidden gem!) I asked Grant what he put his success down to. “Success doesn’t just come from a good idea. It’s through people coming together. Ask yourself what you really want out of life, and do it well – extremely well”.
For him, the joy in success comes through helping others. “I love seeing people do well, seeing ideas come to fruition.” Spoken like a true entrepreneur but reflected in his actions and words. Grant has been nothing short of enthusiastic in his support of us – both in our move and in our start-up, the workwellgroup. He is generously donating his time to come and speak at our Mindful Leaders Retreat in October and looking forward to meeting business leaders seeking life balance and greater fulfilment.
By far his proudest achievement, has been his partnership with Professor Avni Sali in founding and supporting the growth of NIIM – the National Institute of Integrative Medicine. Long-time friends, Professor Sali and Grant shared a passion for health and wellbeing, and leveraged their complementary skills sets, to build a clinic that is squarely for the prevention of disease as opposed to the treatment of illness. Today, NIIM houses Australia’s largest integrative medical clinic, providing the highest standard in healthcare to patients with acute and chronic illness, as well as those seeking to implement a healthy lifestyle for optimum health and disease prevention.
It was around the same time that Grant realised to be true to his values and live an authentic life, he would follow his dream to move to Byron Bay, a dream 20 years in the making. It was an easy decision to make, but not an uncomplicated one. “I knew I had to be here. It was my future”.
To make the move, he let go of one of his companies, to free himself from over commitment. And the gain he made in seeking health, happiness and life balance was worth it. “Stress is a killer. Stress is a product of your environment. You control stress by doing things that make you happy. For me, happiness is having success with people. A happy life is a balanced life”.
Grant now shares his time equally between his wife and children, managing a significant property portfolio, and continuing to exert a positive influence in business through his roles as Chairman of Microhire and NIIM. Not a short list of daily challenges, to be sure, but far less stressful and more rewarding. “If you want happiness, you need your body, lifestyle and business all in balance. Happiness is a state of mind. It’s a choice”.
